90-Second Trust Window (Four-Phase Model)
A model, from Chase Hughes's "90-Second Brain Capture" framework, claiming trust and influence in any new interaction are decided unconsciously within a fixed 90-second window structured as four sequential brain phases. Missing a phase is claimed to make the following ones exponentially harder — the phases fire in order and can't be skipped.
The Four Phases
- Authority Imprint (0-10s) — the brain categorizes the new person almost entirely on non-verbal data: friend/threat, leader/follower, matters/doesn't matter. - Novelty Break (10-30s) — the brain checks whether the person is "actually what they appear to be." Predictability causes the brain to relax and lose the window, so subtle (not extreme) pattern disruption — a pause, a tone shift, non-sequential phrasing — triggers an involuntary orienting response before the brain settles.
- Identity Softening (30-60s) — focused attention plus uncertainty loosens the listener's rigid sense of self, so language delivered here carries disproportionate weight. This is the window Inception (Indirect Self-Persuasion)-style dissociated language is claimed to land hardest in.
- Elevation / Stakes (60-90s) — the interaction shifts from merely "interesting" to "important." Authority held alongside rising stakes reads to the listener as being truly seen without judgment — the entry point into deeper escalation, see Deviance Escalation Ladder (D1-D5) & Permission Bridge.
Why it matters
The model frames influence as riding a hardwired categorize→feel→accept brain sequence rather than fighting it. No independent evidence is offered for the specific timing or its neurological basis beyond the presenter's own assertion — treat the second-counts as a rhetorical framework, not a measured finding.
