Approach Anxiety as a Normal Biological Response

Overview

Approach anxiety is a leftover instinct from a time when the world was less safe — a normal, largely biological response, not a character flaw or a sign of being "less of a man." Fear is usually attached to specific elements of the approach process rather than being global, so isolating those elements turns "get over approach anxiety" into a simpler, decomposable problem.

The long-term solution

There's no trick that permanently removes the fear — the actual fix is doing enough approaches that go well until you have enough positive references that you're more excited to approach than scared. That's the state Todd V, his coaches, and his advanced students already occupy. Progressive Desensitization (Approach Anxiety) and Approach Anxiety Reduction Toolkit (Tricks & Reframes) are scaffolding to get through the reps needed to reach it, not substitutes for it.
