Attitude as Self-Fulfilling Prophecy (Excitement vs. Fear)

Robert Greene's advice to young people: your attitude toward the future — excited and open versus fearful and anxious — is not just a reaction to how hard life will be, it's a cause of it. A fearful, worried, closed attitude "infects" you and becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy: believing the world is against you makes you sabotage yourself before you even try. The opposite attitude — excitement about your possibilities, openness to relationships, travel, and new fields even knowing they carry risk (including the pain of a breakup) — keeps possibilities open rather than closing them off.

This reframes attitude as causally prior to circumstance rather than downstream of it, which is the same move behind Confidence as Survivability ("I Will Be Okay") ("I will be okay" as a stance that precedes and enables risk-taking, not a conclusion drawn after safety is proven). Greene ties this specifically to the transition into a chaotic, political adult/work world — you need to be "tough for entering this world," and the high school years are framed as preparation for that adventure rather than the adventure itself.

See Discovering Your Life's Task (Vocation) for the companion piece of Greene's advice — that this open attitude should be paired with a developing sense of your vocation, not just vague optimism. Same author as Seducer Archetypes (Greene's Typology) (Robert Greene, The Art of Seduction).
