Broad SKU Portfolio Redundancy Strategy

Overview

A catalog-construction strategy that builds sales resilience through hundreds or thousands of interchangeable, deeply-stocked SKUs rather than concentrating revenue in a handful of hero products. Practiced at Touch of Class, where roughly 400-500 core products drove ~50% of sales while thousands of long-tail SKUs — many selling only once or twice a month — made up the rest.

Because no single SKU carries outsized revenue share, a stockout on any one listing barely dents total sales. The tradeoff is operational: the strategy depends on catalog-wide rank tracking (e.g. Helium 10 Keyword Tracker) to confirm that individual listings recover rank quickly after restocking rather than losing position permanently — redundancy without that tracking discipline just becomes catalog sprawl.

Contrasts with hero-SKU concentration models and with Single-SKU-to-Variation Consolidation (Merging Standalone Listings for AOV/LTV), which is about merging redundant SKUs rather than deliberately maintaining many of them.
