Camera-Movement Vocabulary → Emotional-Effect Mapping for AI Video Prompting
A working vocabulary of camera moves, each paired with a specific, deliberate emotional or perceptual effect on the viewer — usable as a prompting reference for any AI video tool, not just the Higgsfield Cinema Studio product where it was first cataloged (see Higgsfield @-Element Asset System, Start Frame as the Primary Determinant of AI Video Quality). Straight-line moves
- Dolly in — camera moves forward toward the subject; draws the viewer closer without them noticing.
- Dolly out — camera moves backward; creates isolation as the character shrinks and the environment grows.
- Fast dolly in (rush) — dolly in at high speed; used for shock/realization so the viewer feels the acceleration.
- Pan left/right — camera rotates in place; lets the viewer read the layout of an environment from a fixed point.
- Tilt up — camera rotates upward from a fixed point; a "reveal" that builds stature and presence.
- Tilt down — camera rotates downward; an "arrival," like descending into a scene.
- Dolly left/right — lateral camera move; foreground and background shift at different speeds (parallax), revealing depth instantly.
- Over the shoulder — camera anchored behind a character's shoulder; instant emotional connection by sharing their viewpoint, short of full POV.
Orbital / crane moves
- Orbit 180 — half-circle move from front to side profile; gives the viewer time to look at a character being introduced.
- Full 360 spin (orbit around) — continuous full rotation; delivers the complete picture in one move, for action beats or product reveals.
- Slow cinematic arc — a wide, gentle, selective curve (not a full orbit); slows time down and makes a moment feel important.
- Jib/crane up — vertical lift; shrinks the character while revealing more environment, often used to close a sequence.
- Jib/crane down — vertical descent counterpart to crane up.
Static-camera zoom/focus moves
- Zoom in — lens-only move, no camera translation or parallax; narrows the frame to create "instant obsession."
- Zoom out — lens pulls back to reveal true scale in sharp detail.
- Crash zoom — sudden, snapping zoom-push; forces attention (drama à la Tarantino, comedy à la Edgar Wright).
- Rack focus — focus shifts between two subjects within one static shot; attention follows the sharpness.
- Fisheye — extreme wide-angle lens distortion; bends lines and exaggerates depth for an unsettling look.
Aerial / scale moves

Tracking shots (subject in motion)
- Leading shot — subject walks toward camera as camera pulls back; subject "owns the space." Requires describing the subject's action, not just the camera move, or the tool will move the camera around a static subject.
- Following shot — camera trails the subject; close = urgent ("chasing"), wide = observational ("watching them leave").
- Side tracking shot — camera moves laterally beside a walking subject; neutral, good for walk-and-talk.
- POV walk — first-person viewpoint with natural head-bob; removes the "emotional buffer" between viewer and scene.
Sequence-chaining move
- Through shot — camera glides through a physical barrier (wall, glass); carries the previous clip's final frame forward as the next clip's start frame, chaining separate generations into one continuous sequence.
Underlying distinctions
- Dolly vs. zoom: dolly physically moves the whole camera and preserves perspective; zoom only changes the lens and compresses the background (the "classic flat look" of older films).
- Orbit vs. arc: orbit is mechanical and delivers full context; arc is gentle and selective, used to dramatize a single moment rather than survey a scene.
