Cagan's explanation for why the ratio of 'best' companies/practitioners to 'the rest' has stayed roughly flat (10-20% vs. 80-90%) over the 20 years he has tried to shift it, even as the absolute number of good practitioners has risen. His mechanism: a new PM searching 'how do I product manage' is statistically most likely to land on feature-team-style content simply because it is the dominant volume online, and generative AI's predictive-text mechanics — trained on that same dominant volume — are likely to reinforce it further rather than correct it.
Contrasts with AI as Amplifier of Existing Discovery Culture, which makes a parallel claim at the level of an individual company's discovery culture; this concept makes the claim at the level of the entire industry's content ecosystem.
Don't assume AI tools or generic search results reflect best practice by default — the dominant content is, by volume, the weaker (feature-team) model, and AI is likely to entrench that.
