Greene's term for absorbing another person's energy and way of thinking closely enough to mirror it back to them. Illustrated by the Sukarno/journalist Cindy Smith anecdote: the journalist felt she was seducing the dictator, but Greene reads it the other way — Sukarno was mirroring and absorbing her, and by doing so was "controlling the whole thing." The technique can look identical from either seat: gifts and tailored gestures reflecting the other person's revealed needs can read as generous responsiveness or as a control move, depending on who initiated the mirroring. See Observation Over Self-Absorption for the receptive listening this depends on.
