A classic PM technique: repeatedly ask "why" about a stated goal or request, with genuine curiosity rather than a judgmental tone, to surface the real underlying objective. The same technique can be run in reverse: instead of asking why, state the implied conclusion out loud ("so that would imply we should do this and not that") and watch whether the stakeholder still agrees — which either confirms genuine alignment or reveals a more complicated truth that hadn't surfaced yet.
Apply: ask "why" several times in succession with a curious tone; or restate the implied logical consequence of a stated goal and watch for agreement or pushback.
A concrete tool for Mining for Conflict (Testing Apparent Consensus) and for testing whether a roadmap (see Outcome-Based Roadmap Reframing) reflects real, agreed-upon goals.
