High-Alignment/High-Autonomy Model

A cascading structure — vision → strategy → objectives/OKRs/metrics — used to give teams both strategic context and room to decide how to pursue it. The cascade is what makes autonomy safe: a team can be trusted to solve a problem its own way only once it has a visible, unbroken line from the company vision down to its own objective.

Without this cascade, an org gets the Air Sandwich (Strategic Context Gap) instead — clear vision at the top, clear backlog at the bottom, nothing connecting them. This model is the structural precondition behind Three Conditions for Empowerment's requirement that leaders hand teams problems, not features, and it's the "steering wheel" side of the Car/Vehicle Analogy for Transformation Readiness. OKRs are the cascade's bottom rung, not a stand-alone fix — see OKRs/KPIs as Business-Strategy Mechanism.

Apply

Build and communicate the full vision → strategy → objectives chain explicitly, so a team's local OKR visibly traces back to company vision, instead of granting autonomy with no strategic anchor underneath it.

Netflix Example: Product and Content Tightly Aligned, Loosely Coupled

Gibson Biddle describes Netflix's product and content organizations as 'tightly aligned and loosely coupled': the two groups share strategic context and goals, but product decisions are made by product people, and content/studio input does not sit on a committee that co-decides product calls. This is offered as a concrete instance of the high-alignment/high-autonomy pattern applied across a product/content boundary rather than within a single product org.

Product/Content Alignment (Netflix)

Netflix describes this as being "tightly aligned and loosely coupled": the product team and content team stay aligned on overall direction, but each makes its own decisions independently — no cross-team committee sign-off is required. Decision rights stay with the team closest to the decision (e.g., product decisions are made solely by product), while a shared strategic direction keeps the two orgs pointed the same way.
