Heart rate variability (HRV) is used as the primary biomarker for training recovery state. Higher variability generally signals a more relaxed/recovered nervous system; a consistently low HRV signals lingering stress or fatigue.

HRV is framed as superior to resting heart rate for recovery tracking, but cross-device comparisons are unreliable — measure under identical daily conditions (first thing, after bathroom, before food/phone) and interpret against a personal multi-week baseline (~1 month minimum) rather than day-to-day swings.
Gray-zone framework: every biomarker (not just HRV) has normal individual variation — a personal "gray zone" defined by your own mean and variability from 1–2 weeks of data. Normal fluctuation needs no action; only intervene when a metric sits outside that personal range for roughly 3–5+ consecutive days.
Phase-dependent response: whether a low HRV/recovery score should trigger a lighter day depends on training phase. During an adaptation-building block, a poor score may just mean training is working — don't back off. During a peaking phase, use Post-Workout Down-Regulation (Breathing Protocols)'s acute state shifters instead of assuming the day must be lighter.
CO2 Tolerance Test: a no-equipment ~1-minute self-test (comfortable breath-hold time), used to calibrate box-breathing duration; per the source's coaching experience it tracks closely with HRV, making it a cheap daily proxy when a device isn't available.
