# Listing Expectation Management for Borderline-Rated Products
When a new listing's early reviews land at a mediocre rating tier (per Review-Before-Rank Launch Sequencing), one mitigation is to deliberately dial back promotional claims in the listing copy — a 'less promising' listing on purpose. Understating benefits reduces the number of buyers who convert, but raises the odds that the buyers who do convert have expectations the product can actually meet, protecting the star rating from further erosion.
This trades volume for satisfaction and rating stability: fewer, better-matched buyers over more buyers with mismatched expectations. Used together with Keyword Narrowing for Review-Quality Protection (narrowing who even sees the listing) as a two-pronged response to a shaky early rating, rather than accepting the rating as fixed or pulling the product.
