Midjourney Omni Reference (Character Consistency)

Omni Reference is Midjourney's character-reference feature for maintaining visual consistency across generations: drag a reference image directly into the prompt bar (no download/upload round-trip), write a new prompt, and Midjourney generates a new scene where the character resembles the reference.

Core technique

Unique-look prompting: give the character one or two distinguishing, describable traits (e.g. pink hair, a specific jacket color, body shape) so the model has something concrete to lock onto and reproduce across generations.
Full-body completeness: for full-body shots, explicitly prompt for footwear and add 'standing' — Midjourney otherwise tends to seat the character or omit shoes.
Clothing-change reuse: feed the same Omni Reference image back in while prompting a new outfit (e.g. a wedding dress) to keep a character consistent across a story's wardrobe changes, instead of re-describing the character from scratch each time.

Limitations and workarounds

Midjourney (as of this writing) supports only one Omni Reference image at a time. To put two established characters in one scene, combine them into a single reference image first — an unofficial workaround that works but leaks details between characters (e.g. one character's leather shoes bleeding onto the other).
The same combined-reference trick can target one character's clothing within a two-character image, though results aren't exact (e.g. a designed skirt ending up longer than intended).
Aspect-ratio switching acts as a general-purpose fix lever independent of prompt content — regenerating at a different aspect ratio can correct broken composition, wrong elements, or anatomical/proportion errors, especially on non-human subjects.

Related workflow chaining

Rough Midjourney character design sheets (sketch-quality, valued as their own aesthetic) can be cropped and described via ChatGPT, then re-rendered with more surface detail through Krea's Flux model — explicitly not meant to preserve 100% fidelity — before being brought back into Midjourney as a refreshed reference for further variation.
