# Momentum Management in Graduated Escalation
Confidence behaves like a resource with momentum: consecutive successes build it, consecutive failures erode it. Escalating the difficulty of targets (or of tactics like the rapport-breaking covered in Standing Out Over Likability) should happen gradually, preserving a sweet spot of frequent success with occasional failure — jumping straight to the hardest targets produces a failure run that damages inner game.
If success stops after raising standards too fast, the recovery is to return to the behaviors that previously worked, re-stabilize on that baseline, and only then reintroduce the harder targets or techniques incrementally.
Applies across all of Charisma as a Trainable Skill (Reps)'s drills — the reps only compound into charisma if the difficulty curve keeps hit-rate high enough to reinforce rather than punish.
Escalation — physical or venue progression — is a distinct mechanism from attraction-building: it capitalizes on attraction that already exists rather than generating new attraction. Relying on physical escalation or venue changes to create attraction that isn't there yet is a common failure mode; attraction has to be built first (teasing, storytelling, non-reactivity, opinions, social proof — see Flirting as an Attitude Decision (Premise + Tease Framework)), with escalation then used to capitalize on it. The same compliance can be built through venue changes as much as through physical escalation.
A date follows a rough structural arc that maps onto this: open → establish the man-to-woman premise → evaluate (whether she's his type, letting her impress him) → build narrative → close. By the time of an actual date she has typically already allocated scarce time and already likes him, so how she's actually behaving in the moment (mood, shit-tests, feistiness) is a more reliable guide to which stage or tool is needed than assumptions based on date status alone.

4 Jokes That Make Women Notice You (Charisma on Command) applies this concept's graduated-escalation logic to verbal innuendo specifically, framing it as the riskiest of four joke types because it requires accurately gauging interest first:
This should be punctuated with plain silliness rather than run continuously — see Push-Pull Teasing, which the video explicitly invokes (via an earlier Craig Ferguson-focused piece) as the mechanism for alternating tension-raising innuendo with tension-releasing non-suggestive playfulness.
