The 1% Rule (Always Stay Open to Your Next Job)

Overview

Doshi's "1% Rule": never let your openness to your next job fall all the way to 0%, even when extremely busy at work. Keep at least 1% of your energy and time available for inbound opportunities. Doshi names this as a mistake he has made himself — closing entirely to 0% when busy is common among leaders, not just early-career people.

The 0% vs. 1% distinction

The rule is a mental hack, not a time-management prescription — the actual effort of staying at 1% open is small, but there's "a big psychological difference between being at 0% and being at 1%." At 0%, you've mentally closed the door and stop noticing or responding to signal. At 1%, the door stays cracked enough that you register opportunities and can act on the rare one that matters, without spending real bandwidth on an active search.
