Operational Event as Dual-Purpose Discovery Signal

A technique for getting continuous Discovery (Product Discovery Process) signal for free by instrumenting an existing operational workflow rather than running separate research. At Palace Hotels, an abandoned online booking is captured and used two ways at once: as a business action (routed to the call center as a follow-up lead to recover the booking) and as a research signal (why did this guest not complete checkout?). The research side surfaced friction points that led to concrete product changes, such as adding trust-building messaging at the exact step where guests dropped off.

The generalizable move: find a drop-off point already instrumented for operational reasons, and treat every instance as a standing, zero-marginal-cost research opportunity rather than only a recovery opportunity. This differs from the Continuous Strategy Feedback Loop pattern in that the signal source is an operational side-effect (already being captured for revenue recovery) rather than a deliberately designed discovery/experimentation touchpoint.
