Pod HR Ratio (Designer/PM per Six Engineers)

Overview

The default tech-industry staffing heuristic of adding roughly one designer and one PM for every six engineers hired — treated at Whatnot as a ratio to resist rather than a rule to follow. It's the implicit baseline that "We Regret That Product Management Exists" (Whatnot's PM-Scarcity Principle) is defined against: every headcount add above the ratio's floor has to be justified by a specific need rather than assumed.

Apply

When headcount planning defaults to a fixed PM/designer-to-engineer ratio, treat that as the thing to push back on, not the target to hit. Require a named, specific problem before adding the role.
