Quadrant Life-Balance System
Andy Galpin's life-balance tool (adapted from Kenny Cain), used as Step 3 of his Andy Galpin — Training & Metabolism System 10-step program design method — checked before exercise selection, so training plans are built to fit life rather than the reverse.
The Four Quadrants
Business, Relationships, Fitness, Recovery share one fixed pool of 10 points, allocated honestly based on current life priorities. Recovery should get at least roughly 20–50% of the Fitness allocation — a hard floor, not an afterthought.
Making Priorities Real
Vague intentions ("work less," "train more") don't hold. Galpin converts each priority into a specific, time-bound rule:
- Specific Life Actions — e.g. "no work after 7 PM Thursday–Sunday" instead of "work less."
- "Drop Everything And..." rules (D3AT / DEAR / DEAL — Drop Everything And Train / Read / Love) — a fixed daily trigger time (e.g. 3 PM = train, no exceptions) that forces the action regardless of what else is competing for attention.
- Decision Closure — once a rule like this is set, treating it as genuinely non-negotiable (not re-litigated day to day) raises both immediate and long-term subjective happiness, per Galpin, because it stops competing options from staying open simultaneously.
- Visibility — post the written quadrant split and action rules somewhere seen repeatedly (phone lock screen, the physical spot where you're most likely to break the rule).
- Accountability delegation — hand the written plan to a spouse, training partner, or business partner who has standing to call out a violation.
- Checkpoint loop — revisit the allocation weekly or monthly; any change requires rewriting and reposting the plan.
Feeds directly into training-plan constraints: available days/week, session length, and how much a program can realistically ask for all derive from the Fitness quadrant's share of the 10 points, combined with Nine Adaptations Framework adaptation choice.
