A framework from Annie Duke's book Quit, adapted for stakeholder relationships: before entering a role or a working relationship with a difficult or blocked stakeholder, set explicit criteria in advance for what you hope to get out of it (e.g. learning, working with great people, mission accomplishment) and a trial period — roughly six months — at which point you'll disengage if those criteria aren't being met.
Having the threshold defined before you're inside the frustration makes the decision to move on an objective one rather than an emotional one. Complements Diagnosing Difficult Stakeholders (Before Judging Them), which is about understanding why a stakeholder is difficult before judging them — quitting criteria is what you fall back on once that diagnosis says the relationship isn't going to resolve.
