Spotify Squad Model

An org-design pattern, explicitly borrowed from Spotify's engineering culture, that organizes people into small, empowered squads aligned to problem areas rather than into traditional hierarchical, functional departments.

Used at Datasite (formerly Merrill Corporation) as the replacement structure when CTO/CPO Thomas rebuilt the product organization from scratch. Each squad is meant to own a problem area end-to-end, staffed at minimum by a Product Trio (and sometimes an Extended Trio (Commercial Stakeholders in Product Trios)).

The squad boundaries were deliberately designed to correspond to the platform's modular service boundaries — see Org-Architecture Mirroring (Squads ↔ Microservices) — so that team autonomy and system modularity reinforce each other rather than fight each other.

Related: Wholesale Leadership Replacement (Replace vs. Coach-Up) (the squad model replaced the prior management layer), Monolith-to-Microservices Migration Playbook (the corresponding architecture).
