SQP Funnel Stage Diagnostic (Thumbnail vs. Listing Problem)
A diagnostic built on Amazon Search Query Performance (SQP) Report: for each priority search term, compare the brand's share % of the market at each of three funnel stages — impressions, clicks, purchases — to locate exactly where the funnel breaks down.
Reading the pattern
- Impression share → click share drops steeply: a click-through-rate / thumbnail problem. The product is being seen proportionally to competitors but not clicked. Fix: better communicate the underlying benefit or concept in the title or main image, within Amazon's terms of service. Overlaps with Metric-Diagnostic Title Strategy Selection and Product Photo Pain-Point/Solution Strategy as remedies.
- Click share → purchase share drops steeply: a conversion-rate / listing problem. Shoppers click through at a fair rate but don't buy. Fix: better communicate in the listing content that the product solves that specific searcher's problem, and split-test which term (e.g., "bag" vs. "storage") is actually driving the gap — different search terms imply different buyer intent even on the same listing. Relates to Amazon Listing Optimization: SEO vs. Conversion Optimization and Benefit-Over-Feature Bullet Point Litmus Test.
- Brand share holds steady or rises across all three stages: the term is already converting well relative to the market and deserves more traffic/budget rather than a content fix.
The diagnostic's value concentrates in midtail terms (see Amazon Search Query Performance (SQP) Report) — this is where funnel breaks are both frequent and fixable, as opposed to longtail noise or maintail terms with diluted relevance.
Worked Examples & Naming
Named more precisely as two paired checks against brand share of impressions/clicks/purchases for a term:
- Click-through diagnosis (impression share vs. click share): a steep drop here means competitors convert visibility into clicks better — a thumbnail/title relevance problem. Fix by testing the term's underlying concept or benefit into the title or main image, within Amazon's terms of service.
- Conversion diagnosis (click share vs. purchase share): a steep drop here means shoppers click through but buy competitors' products instead — a listing-content problem. Fix by revising copy/images to communicate that the product solves that search term's specific use case, then split-test the wording.
A worked contrast from one brand's two products (leak-proof ice bags vs. ice storage bags) showed opposite diagnoses side by side: one product's high click share masked a listing-content failure, while the other confirmed it was already converting well down-funnel and just needed more traffic (see SQP-Based Traffic Allocation Decision Rule).
Segment-Level CTR Diagnostic (Search-Term Comparison)
Beyond the aggregate CTR-vs-CVR split, Rawlings applies the same diagnostic within a single ASIN by comparing thumbnail CTR across semantically distinct search terms in the Amazon Search Query Performance (SQP) Report. Worked example: for a wooden phone holder, if 'travel wooden phone holder' clicks the thumbnail at roughly half the rate of 'desktop wooden phone holder,' that gap signals the primary image/title fails to communicate the travel use case for that specific shopper segment — prompting a targeted primary-image split test or title/bullet rewrite aimed at that segment, rather than a generic image refresh. This closes the loop with PPC Data Loop (Iterative Campaign Testing → Listing Optimization): the fix is validated by feeding resulting sales data back into the same Amazon Search Term Report-driven campaigns that surfaced the segment-level gap.
