Supplement Fraud & Quality Verification

Overview

Supplement fraud — products that don't contain what their label claims — is framed as a widespread, economically-incentivized problem, per testing lab Light Labs. Two illustrative cases: a best-selling Amazon creatine gummy tested at 0% of its claimed creatine, and a retail protein powder tested at ~3g of protein against a ~21g label claim (the gap made up with carbohydrate filler). Misses of this magnitude are treated as evidence of deliberate fraud rather than manufacturing error, since manufacturers are responsible for testing inbound raw materials.

Product Matrix Risk

Format affects fraud/degradation risk: plain powders (e.g., scoop creatine in a bag — see Creatine Supplementation) are lowest-risk; gummies, drinks, proprietary blends, and multivitamins are higher-risk. Multivitamins are called out as "hard mode" because many vitamins are chemically incompatible with each other and with the product matrix (gummy/capsule/gel) over an 18-month+ shelf life. Even a correctly-formulated product can degrade in the supply chain (heat, light exposure in warehouse/truck/shelf) — hence "keep in a cool, dry, dark area" labeling.

Market Dynamics

Low minimum order quantities make it easy to start a supplement brand, correlating with higher fraud risk in certain formats. Retail channel choice acts as a quality proxy: retailers like Whole Foods impose their own testing requirements independent of manufacturer claims, while platforms like Amazon are described as moving toward stricter testing requirements partly in response to reputational risk from cases like the creatine gummy fraud. The stated goal of testing-transparency efforts is to let compliant brands "win the category" over cheaper fraudulent competitors, creating a market incentive for bad actors to fix their products.

Case Study: Turkesterone / Ecdysterone Underdosing

Turkesterone (an ecdysteroid) has zero human studies of its own; the closest evidence is a 2019 Eisenmenger study on a related ecdysteroid showing muscle gains vs. placebo — but lab testing found those pills contained only 6% of the ecdysterone claimed on the label.

Independent lab tests by Nootropics Depot found Greg Doucette's "Turk Builder" contained just 0.15% of its labeled turkesterone dose (0.7mg vs. 5,100mg claimed), Gorilla Mind's product had less than 1%, and some other turkesterone products had none detectable at all. Together, the 2019 ecdysterone underdosing and the 2022 Nootropics Depot lab tests form a pattern: the entire ecdysteroid category has a quality-control problem layered on top of an unproven-efficacy problem. Application

Per Dr. Eric Helms's "late adopter" principle: even the most effective supplements (creatine, caffeine) have only a small impact, so it's low-risk to wait a year or two on unproven new products — like turkesterone — before buying, especially in a poorly regulated industry.
