A diagnostic for whether an artifact labeled "vision" is actually one, per John Moore: can you state what problems you're solving and for whom; can you state how you'll make customers' lives better; and can you see the corporate strategy / company identity reflected in it. Missing any answer means what you have isn't a real vision yet — often it's really an Inventory-as-Vision Anti-Pattern or a restated mission. Companion to Vision Vacuum: No Vision, Not Bad Vision, Is the Real Failure Mode: that concept explains why roughly 80% of companies fail this test; this is the test itself.
"If I cannot answer the question, what problems are you going to solve and who are you solving those problems for? You don't have a vision."
