AI-Background-First Product Photography Workflow

Overview

A three-step product photography workflow that inverts the traditional order: generate the styled background first with an AI image model, then shoot the real product to match it, then composite.

  1. Research + generate: study the client's brand style (website, Pinterest Reference Sourcing for AI Image Generation) and feed the AI model (e.g. ChatGPT) a phone photo of the product plus a style-reference image, asking it to place the product inside that style of scene. Expect several attempts before a usable background emerges — a satisfying first-try result is not the norm.
  2. Match the physical shoot to the AI output: photograph the real product at the same camera angle/perspective as the AI background (mismatched perspective is harder for the model to reinterpret, and harder for the photographer to composite later), on a backdrop color close to the AI scene's dominant color so light spill lands naturally on the product, and using a similarly-shaped placeholder prop when the real prop from the scene isn't on hand.
  3. Composite: Lightroom base edit → Photoshop Select Subject/background removal (imperfect edges are fine — Iterative Generative Fill for Background Cleanup fixes them later) → export/reimport as PNG → Neural Filters Super Zoom to upscale the AI background → align and blend the product cutout, keeping fragments of the AI's own placeholder-product shadows/contact points for realism (see AI-Placeholder Shadow/Contact Blending for Composite Realism) → Neural Filters Harmonization to color-match (PNG-to-PNG only) → whole-image grain pass in Lightroom to unify texture.

The pitch: the expensive part of a product shoot — environment, props, studio lighting — is now AI-generated for free; the photographer's remaining skill is precisely matching a real shot's lighting and perspective to a target image and compositing convincingly.
