Amazon's own free research tool for designing new products, reached via Seller Central hamburger menu > Growth > Product Opportunity Explorer. Unlike third-party tools such as Helium 10 Cerebro or Data Dive Niche Dive Tool (Automated Competitor Selection), the data comes directly from Amazon's own search and sales logs.
Workflow: type the main product term into the search box first. If it surfaces as a top term in the results list, that's itself a signal of strong existing demand. Clicking into the term opens the keyword view, which unlocks four tabs: Products, Trend, Purchase Drivers, and Customer Review Insights (see Product Opportunity Explorer Trend Tab Signals, Purchase Drivers Feature Impact Analysis, Negative Review Topic Mining for Product Development for the latter three).
Total search volume shown is annual, not monthly — divide by 12 to get a comparable monthly search estimate (e.g. ~200,000/year ≈ 16-17k/month; related terms in the same niche ran ~18,000 and ~14,000 monthly).
The Products tab shows the clickshare distribution across existing listings for the term, alongside each listing's price point, rating, and review count. A concentrated clickshare (few listings capturing most clicks) plus strong sentiment on those listings signals a harder page-one entry; a more fragmented clickshare is more approachable.
Complements Amazon Niche Saturation Diagnosis and Differentiation vs. Race-to-the-Bottom as a free-tool alternative for the same "where's the gap" question those frameworks address.
Clicking the top search term inside a customer-need/niche result (e.g., "cupcake stand") opens the keyword view — the detailed data screen with four tabs: Product Opportunity Explorer Products Tab (Clickshare & Competitor Distribution) (clickshare & competitor distribution), Product Opportunity Explorer Trend Tab Signals (search volume/price/conversion trend), Purchase Drivers Feature Impact Analysis (feature correlation with sales), and Negative Review Topic Mining for Product Development (ranked review complaints).
Workflow: type the candidate product's main term into the search box first and confirm it surfaces as a top term — this confirms existing demand before drilling into the keyword view for the rest of the data.
Beyond sizing an existing niche, Product Opportunity Explorer can vet a brand-extension product idea before launch: pull niche size (e.g., confirming a $120M/year pain-relief roll-on niche) and competition depth (e.g., confirming only one existing competitor for a hemp-based menstrual-pain cream) to de-risk the decision to launch a new, possibly differently-branded, product line.
Used to screen extension ideas for an existing hemp pain-relief cream brand: a hemp menstrual pain cream scored very low competition despite a large addressable market in non-hemp equivalents, and a heel-crack roll-on format was flagged as underserved since most competing products in that niche ship only as creams.
Used to green-light a hemp menstrual-pain-cream line extension: the tool showed a large overall menstrual-pain-cream market but very low competition once narrowed to hemp-based entries, read as an under-served sub-niche within a proven-demand category rather than a novel, unvalidated product bet.
