Change How, Not What, You Talk About

Overview

Authentic interests don't need to be hidden or abandoned in a mismatched room — only the tone and framing used to present them needs to adapt to the audience. Dr. K raises meditation with comedian Bobby Lee by framing it through "the ecstasy of ... need to go pee," matching the room's irreverent register, versus the clinical tone he uses discussing Ayurvedic medicine with Dr. Mike. Same underlying interest, different delivery.

Practice exercise: imagine explaining one genuine interest of yours (e.g. mythology) three ways — to a group of kids, a group of teens, and a group of adults. For adults: psychological analysis (e.g. the Minotaur myth via Jungian psychology). For teens: the myth itself, straight. For kids: imaginative play-acting. The content stays constant; only the register moves.

This is the mechanism that makes Reading the Room Before Joining and The Social Agreement actionable — once you know the room's register, this is how you carry your real material into it without hiding it or clashing with the room.
