Before engaging with an unfamiliar or chaotic room, pause and do nothing but observe what it's already paying attention to and responding to — its energy level (high/low) and register (joking/serious). Acting before reading that pattern gets you ignored, as happened to Dr. K when his "let's meditate" opener was brushed off on Bobby Lee's chaotic Tigerbelly podcast.
Once you've read the pattern, you have to join it — at least briefly — matching the room's implicit energy (e.g. trading playful teasing) so people register you as part of the group. This is a bridge, not the destination: staying too long in that accepted role becomes a people-pleasing trap, where you keep repeating whatever behavior first won social acceptance (pretending to like sports, staying "the funny one") instead of being yourself.
See The Social Agreement for what you're actually reading in the room, Change How, Not What, You Talk About for how to carry your real interests across that bridge, and Leading With an Off-Ramp for how to move the room past the bridge role once you have its attention.
