Controlling the Emotional Tone of an Interaction

A confident person sets the emotional register of an interaction themselves rather than letting it be dictated by the other party or the situation — either making an exchange more serious (e.g. via a vulnerable story) or cutting tension with humor. Example: in the Depp v. Heard trial, Depp's 'mega pint' remark punctured a tense, literal line of questioning with an unexpected playful answer, shifting the emotional tone of the exchange.

This differs from merely reacting to the tone already set — the technique is to introduce the tone proactively.
