The Four Magnets (Mirror, Echo, Reversal, Completion)
Chase Hughes's taxonomy of four mechanisms by which Behavioral Magnetics (Emotional Gravity) (the nervous system's pull toward the familiar) manifests in relationship and life-pattern choices:
- Mirror Magnet — attracts people and environments that replicate how you were treated growing up (e.g., a critical parent produces attraction to critical partners). The pull is toward what feels like home, not toward what's good for you.
- Echo Magnet — unconsciously recreates old pain (choosing drama, choosing burnout) to manufacture a placebo feeling of control over the pain "this time."
- Reversal Magnet — flips the original childhood role: the person who felt powerless becomes dominant/controlling; the person who felt invisible takes over every room. Framed as a genuine trade-off rather than simply bad — it "works" at preventing re-victimization and can look like strength, leadership, or success, while functioning as armor rather than healing, and leaves the person isolated: "It's armor with a smile on it." Parallels Protective vs. Controlling Behavior (Partner-Selection Contingent) and Repression vs. Control: Same Restraint, Opposite Origin (same outward restraint, different origin/outcome).
- Completion Magnet — repeatedly pursues people who resemble the person who originally hurt you, driven by the hope of finally fixing or completing the old unresolved relationship. The target doesn't need to match the original wound's identity (case study: a man chasing chaotic women is diagnosed as chasing his volatile, undemonstrative father, not his mother). "You're dating the hope that this time the monster becomes safe." Compare Idealization-Then-Withdrawal as an Attachment Trap as a related attachment pattern.
Diagnosing which magnet is driving a given pattern is step 2 of Four-Step Magnet-Breaking Process (Spot, Name, Trace, Expose).
