Generative Fill Background Compositing Workflow
Overview
Using Adobe Photoshop's Generative Fill to swap out a photo's background, then layering traditional Photoshop compositing skills on top to reach professional quality. The core claim: Generative Fill alone gets you most of the way — it matches lighting, color, and perspective — but botches edge quality and background resolution, so it's a rough first draft, not a finished composite.
Workflow
- Isolate the subject with Select Subject, then invert the selection via the Contextual Taskbar's invert button to select the background.
- Prompt Generative Fill (e.g. "Green Mountains") to replace the background; generate multiple variants and pick one.
- Clean up leftover subject remnants with Generative Fill with Blank Prompt (Content-Aware Erase).
- Apply Tilt-Shift Blur to Mask Low-Resolution AI Backgrounds to hide the low-resolution AI background — especially effective when the source photo was already slightly out of focus.
- Re-mask the subject cleanly (Select Subject/Quick Selection → Mask button, refined with a soft brush or Pen Tool; Load Selection to reuse a saved precise selection).
- Apply Post-Generative-Fill Color Grading Stack (Light Flare + LUT + Clipped Curves) to match the light source and unify color.
- Finish with Camera Raw Grain to Unify AI Composite Texture to blend the sharp subject against the smoother AI background.
- Step away and return with "fresh eyes" as a deliberate QC pass — catches unnatural highlights/artifacts that need manual correction.
Limitations of Generative Fill
- Cannot reproduce a specific real place exactly (e.g. Machu Picchu, Taj Mahal) — it invents something unique instead.
- Generating an entire background in one pass is currently low quality; box-by-box generation is the practical workaround.
