A non-destructive Photoshop workflow builds every edit as a reversible layer inside a PSD, rather than flattening changes into pixels. The goal: no edit is ever permanent — every layer can be toggled off to return to the original photograph.
Core building blocks: layers, groups, clipping masks, masking, smart objects, and adjustment layers (as opposed to direct pixel edits). Blending modes and "blend if" sit on top of this for compositing multiple photographs together; adjustment layers rather than direct pixel edits keep color/tone changes reversible.
Two entry points feed the same non-destructive PSD:
The layered PSD is the source of truth; flattened exports (JPEG/PNG, compressed for web or print) are generated from it, not the other way around — the PSD itself stays intact and editable after export.
