A Photoshop smart object is a container that holds an image asset (or nested layers) while keeping the original pixels untouched. Any number of transforms, filters, or adjustments can be applied to the container itself — the contents inside stay "completely intact," so the edit can be revisited or reset at any point.
This is one of the core mechanisms underpinning a non-destructive PSD workflow: instead of applying a filter or transform directly to pixels, it's applied to (or via) the smart object, keeping the edit reversible.

A single master smart object (e.g. a locked-down vector logo/wordmark) can be nested and reused across an entire multi-asset project — mockups, composites, layouts. Editing that one core asset propagates the change automatically to every file that references it, which is the practical payoff of non-destructive container editing: a "make once, update everywhere" campaign instead of re-editing each deliverable by hand. For a smart object to read as physically present in a photo (not just pasted on top), stack three techniques on the same nested smart object rather than relying on any one: a smart filter (e.g. blur to match focus falloff), a layer effect (e.g. color overlay to match ambient light/cast color), and grain to match the base photo's noise floor. Used for warping a logo into a sign mockup's perspective, and for seating a new smart object into a removed billboard within a street-photo composite.
