Select Subject & Remove Background (AI Subject Isolation)

Photoshop's Select Subject and Remove Background are cloud-based AI tools that isolate the main subject of a photo in one click, surfaced via the contextual taskbar or the Select menu.

Select Subject produces an active selection around the detected subject (person, object, product) — no mask yet, just a selection ready to feed into whatever comes next.
Remove Background does the same subject detection but goes one step further: it builds the selection and converts it into a layer mask in a single click, instantly leaving the subject on a transparent background.

The raw AI selection is rarely edge-perfect — see Select and Mask: Edge Refinement (Shift Edge & Refine Edge Brush) for cleaning up halos and hair fringing before finalizing.
