Select and Mask: Edge Refinement (Shift Edge & Refine Edge Brush)

Select and Mask is Photoshop's dedicated workspace for refining a selection or layer mask's edges, opened from the Properties panel (double-click a mask thumbnail) or via Select > Select and Mask. It applies to any selection source, not just AI ones — e.g. it's just as useful after Channels-Based Sky Selection (Blue Channel Mask) as after Select Subject & Remove Background (AI Subject Isolation).

Two tools inside it fix the most common cutout artifacts:

• Shift Edge (in Global Refinements) contracts or expands the selection edge. A white halo/fringe around a cutout subject comes from the original background bleeding into edge pixels — not a bad AI selection — so the fix is dragging Shift Edge left to contract the edge inward, not reselecting.
• Refine Edge Brush Tool recalculates the mask in real time as you paint over detailed, hard-to-select areas like hair, stripping out background pixels still caught in the selection.

This refinement step typically happens right after Select Subject / Remove Background and before the cleaned-up selection or mask is used downstream (see Active Selection Auto-Loads as New Layer Mask).
