Sleep Debt Accumulation and Banking

Sleep debt is modeled as a nightly-accumulating deficit between sleep need and sleep obtained, with specific rules for how it can (and can't) be repaid.

Accumulation: needing 8 hours but getting 6 builds 2 hours of debt per night; unaddressed across a work week, debt reaches roughly 10 hours by week's end.

No banking a surplus for later, with one exception: extra sleep can't generally be stored up and drawn down whenever convenient. The one exception is pre-event sleep banking — deliberately sleeping extra in the days immediately before an anticipated period of sleep loss (e.g., travel, a big event), as a short-term buffer.

Repayment timeline: reaction time degrades progressively as nightly sleep drops — roughly 9 hours consistent baseline, 7 hours shows slowing, 5 hours a sharper decline, 3 hours a severe drop-off. Reaction time does not snap back to baseline after just 1–3 nights of recovery sleep; full repayment takes multiple weeks, with the first one to two weeks producing the largest share of recovered performance.

The 'Oversleeping' Myth

'Oversleeping' is described as not really a distinct physiological phenomenon. Grogginess sometimes felt after 9-10 hours of sleep is attributed not to the duration itself being harmful, but to one of two other causes: a shifted wake time relative to one's usual schedule (disrupting circadian alignment), or the body using the extra hours to pay down accumulated sleep debt — which can itself produce a heavier, groggier waking state as the body catches up. Long sleep durations aren't inherently a problem; they're usually a symptom of one of these other factors.

Off-Season Pre-Positioning

Elite athletes are coached to enter the competitive season with zero sleep debt rather than planning to catch up once games start — build consistent, sufficient sleep during the off-season so there's no deficit to service once travel and game schedules compress recovery time. This nuances the popular "catch up on the weekend" intuition: debt cannot be banked for an arbitrary future use, but it can be strategically pre-loaded in the days just before a known, imminent sleep-loss event (a big travel day, a back-to-back, a major life event) — extending a few nights' extra sleep beforehand measurably offsets the deficit to come.
