Controlled study: a college basketball team followed a 5–7 week sleep-extension protocol targeting 9–10 hours nightly (up from typical shorter sleep, to pay back accumulated debt). Results: +9% free-throw shooting, +9% three-point shooting, 12% faster reaction time, 4% faster sprint time.
NBA case study ("Andre"): an NBA player moved from chronic sub-7-hour sleep to consistently sleeping 7.5–8+ hours. Follow-on changes: free-throw shooting nearly doubled (+88.9%), three-point conversion +218%, points per minute +29%, fouls −45%. He won Finals MVP that season, went on to three more championships (four total), and extended his career by roughly 10 years.
