Spending Framing: Buying Affection vs. Facilitating a Relationship

Money and gifts spent on a partner are attraction-neutral in themselves — the debate isn't whether to spend or how much, but the framing and intent behind the spending. This operationalizes Provider Stigma Is a Low-Value Problem: the same dollar amount can read as relationship-building or as transactional, depending on which side of this test it falls on.

The test: does the man also derive joy or enjoyment from what he's paying for? Paying for a trip he wants to go on himself enhances a mutual experience — spending as participation. Buying something purely utilitarian for her, like a refrigerator, with no personal enjoyment in it, is just paying her bills — spending as obligation. The operative question is whether the spending is buying her affection or facilitating a great relationship the two of them are already having.
