Target Adjustment Tool vs Direct Color-Swatch Selection (Lightroom Mix)
Overview
Within Lightroom Mobile Mix (HSL) Panel — Per-Color Hue/Saturation/Luminance, there are two distinct ways to choose which color a Hue/Saturation/Luminance edit targets:
- Target adjustment tool (eyedropper icon, top-middle of the Mix panel): tap it to gray out the color list, then tap-and-drag directly on the photo. It intelligently detects and adjusts all underlying color channels present at that point — useful because most real-world colors aren't pure (e.g. a yellow wall can carry an orange or green cast).
- Direct color-swatch selection: tap one specific named color icon (e.g. "green") to isolate the adjustment to only that narrow color band, ignoring any other channels.
When to use which
- Use the target tool when a color has mixed casts and you want one gesture to grab everything contributing to that visual color.
- Use direct swatch selection when you need precision and the target tool over-reaches — e.g. dragging a yellow wall to green with the target tool, then trying to use the target tool again on the new green wall, also nudges a separate, unrelated yellow wall elsewhere in the photo (because the target tool detects a yellowish hue within the green). Clicking the "green" swatch directly avoids that cross-contamination.
Insight
These two methods are complementary, not interchangeable: the target tool's multi-channel grab is a feature for mixed-cast colors and a liability when isolating a single band.
