This chapter covers the point where mobile editing stops being one-tap work: Lightroom Mobile's global-then-local ordering, the Effects sliders (Texture, Clarity, Dehaze) and the ratios and reversals people use on them, Select Subject and inverted masks used to steer the viewer's eye by brightness and warmth, radial-gradient light sources with negative dehaze that fabricate a sun the camera never saw, and the Mix (HSL) panel for per-color hue/saturation/luminance work. It ends with the restraint principles that keep all of this from reading as an edit, and with Versions, the snapshot mechanism that lets one photo carry several parallel directions. The material comes from a handful of Lightroom Mobile tutorial sources, and where they disagree — most sharply on whether global or local work comes first — the disagreement is left standing rather than smoothed over.
The first discipline in this chapter is an ordering one, and it exists because local adjustments are read relative to whatever global state the file is already in. Push exposure or warmth inside a mask on an un-normalized file and you are guessing; do it on a normalized file and you are deciding. Global Normalize-Then-Style Baseline Before Local Masking lays this out as three passes before any gradient, radial mask, or brush is touched.
Crop and reorient first, so composition isn't undone by local work you've already committed to. Then "normalize" the Light panel: recover highlights and shadows to pull the full tonal range into workable territory, then restore the contrast that recovery flattens by pushing whites right and pulling blacks left. This stage is framed explicitly as building a better foundation, not as arriving at a look. Third comes a global Effects/Color mood pass — texture up slightly, clarity down slightly for softness, dehaze up slightly to claw back the contrast clarity removed, vibrance up, and a fixed warm Hue on the highlights color-grading wheel that gets reused across similar photos rather than re-judged from scratch each time.
For landscapes, where the dynamic range between bright sky and dark shadow is the whole problem, the same concept gives a concrete five-step order: Light tab, Color tab, Effects tab, Details tab (with sharpening masked to exclude the sky so noise isn't sharpened), and only then local masking. The observation attached to it is the reason this chapter exists at all — most casual edits stop after step 2 or 3, global exposure and color, and the shift from a good edit to a stunning one happens in step 5, where masking simulates directional light instead of a uniform global look.
Ordering matters even inside the Light tab: raise exposure slightly first, even if the sky already looks too bright, because shadow recovery matters as much as taming highlights; then drag highlights fully down to recover blown sky detail; push shadows up substantially; nudge whites up slightly; pull blacks down for contrast. The same global-before-local logic has a phone-only version — global correction in the Photos app before handing off to face-specific retouching — but that belongs to Mobile Baseline: iPhone Photos App & Lensa rather than here.
One honest caveat: this is not the only sequencing in the chapter. The masking source described later runs local masking first and applies its global pass last. Both orderings are documented; neither is presented as settled.
The Effects tab is where muddled edits are usually born, because three sliders that all feel like "detail" sliders actually manipulate different properties. Texture vs Clarity vs Dehaze (Lightroom Mobile Effects Sliders) separates them cleanly.
Texture accentuates or smooths fine edges and lines with no shift in tonal values or color at all. Because it doesn't touch brightness or saturation, it's safe to push hard — demoed at 60 on a detail-rich photo and 40 on a landscape. Clarity shifts tonal values and adds midtone contrast, producing a "crispy" feel when raised; it is specifically not recommended for portraits, where crispiness is unflattering on skin. Dehaze is the compound one: it affects tonal contrast/haze and color saturation simultaneously, which is why it looks unnatural fastest and is demoed at just 5 globally.
All three are bidirectional. There is no fixed intensifying default — the correct direction depends on the image and the mood you want. One Lightroom Mobile creator's habitual ratio for the all-positive case is captured in Diagonal-Line Ordering Heuristic (Texture > Clarity > Dehaze): highest magnitude on Texture, lower on Clarity, lowest on Dehaze, so the three values descend in what he calls "almost like a diagonal line." He is explicit that it's a rule of thumb — "you don't always have to do this" — useful as a starting ratio when detail, midtone contrast and haze all need attention on the same file.
The most instructive departure from that ratio is Inverse Clarity + Texture Compensation (Ethereal Landscape Technique), which breaks it on purpose. On a landscape, drop Clarity to roughly -20 to soften the whole image into an ethereal look, then raise Texture to about +40 to restore the fine edge detail — rock faces, foliage — that the softening cost. The pair works because Texture and Clarity, despite both living in the detail neighborhood, are independent: one subtracts overall bite, the other selectively restores edge definition without reintroducing midtone crispiness. The diagonal heuristic assumes all-positive moves; this technique doesn't, which is precisely why it's a legitimate exception rather than a contradiction.
The Effects tab also holds a fourth slider, the vignette, whose purpose is eye-direction rather than edge, tone or color manipulation — it's treated as its own subliminal technique in Mobile Baseline: iPhone Photos App & Lensa and resurfaces here as a finishing step on top of masking.
Lightroom Mobile Masking for Eye-Guidance (Select Subject + Brightness/Warmth Contrast) frames masking — isolating part of an image and applying local, invertible adjustments — as the single most powerful tool available to paid Lightroom subscribers, because it stops being about improving exposure and color and starts being about engineering where the viewer looks. It is gated: free users don't get masking.
The perceptual rule underneath is simple and does most of the work. The eye is involuntarily drawn to whatever is brightest and warmest in the frame. So you either make the subject brighter and warmer than the background, or make the background darker and cooler than the subject — and because a mask can be inverted, one auto-detection serves both directions. Tap Masking → plus → Select subject to auto-generate a mask around the detected subject; Invert Mask on the mask's option row flips it to "everything except." Two Select Subject masks, one inverted and one not, are typically stacked on the same image so both axes run at once. Lightroom keeps a running list of every mask, each with a black-and-white thumbnail where white marks the affected area; tapping one (it highlights red) reactivates it.
The concrete moves: raise Exposure on the subject mask for brightness contrast, and if the subject is already near maximum brightness, invert the same mask and lower the background instead — a ceiling workaround, not a subject-side fix. For warmth contrast, push Temperature to roughly +20 on the subject and pull it to about -10 on the inverted background mask. With the subject mask active, Texture, Clarity and Dehaze go up in descending intensity — the same personal diagonal ordering from the previous section, applied locally rather than globally. Sharpening from the Detail tab is then applied only to the masked subject, which reframes sharpening from a routine global step into a deliberate compositional pull. A vignette follows as global follow-through, and the whole-image pass — slight Exposure decrease, Contrast increase, whole-image Dehaze, small Vibrance boost, in that order — comes last. Pushing that global Dehaze too far was observed to introduce unnatural color.
The same inverted-mask logic has a second, gradient-based form. Subject Glow via Foreground-to-Transparent Radial Gradient + Inverted Mask is at root a Photoshop technique — a foreground-to-transparent radial gradient inheriting a subject selection as its mask, inverted so the glow radiates from behind the subject, set to Linear Dodge so it brightens the background instead of sitting flat on top of it; the selection-to-mask plumbing behind that lives in Photoshop Foundations: Non-Destructive Editing & Selection. But its Lightroom Mobile implementation is pure phone work: drag the Gradient tool from an edge inward to mask off a distracting bright area, such as a bright floor, and pull Exposure down inside it; draw an elliptical/radial mask around the subject and invert it — the icon that "looks like a diagonal black and white cookie" — so an Exposure drop lands on everything outside the ellipse; then add a second, non-inverted mask on the subject to raise Exposure there. Critically, that same subject mask also gets pushed warmer on the Temperature slider, because brightness and temperature are two independent levers that both pull the eye: "whatever I make the warmest part of the image, the viewer's eyes are gonna go there too." The whole spotlight effect depends on these adjustments staying local — a global version of the same move changes nothing about where attention lands.
The step past correcting existing light is inventing light that was never there. Simulated Sun / Light Source via Radial Gradient + Negative Dehaze is the core recipe. Place a Radial Gradient mask at a spot in the frame that is already naturally brighter — don't invent a location that contradicts the photo's existing light logic. Push feather to maximum so the blend is gradual and non-obvious. Raise whites, add warmth, and reduce clarity heavily, around -40, to mimic the softness of lens flare.
The step that actually sells it is dragging Dehaze negative. Positive dehaze cuts through haze and adds contrast; pulled negative inside a local mask it produces a soft glow or bloom, so the fabricated light reads as physically bleeding into the lens rather than as an edit. Texture vs Clarity vs Dehaze (Lightroom Mobile Effects Sliders) calls this an underused move relative to how often positive dehaze and clarity get reached for. From there, tap-and-hold the mask to duplicate it, then reposition and resize the copies to simulate sunlight striking several points on the landscape — each copy gets its own whites, warmth, tint, clarity and dehaze pass instead of stretching one enormous mask over everything.
The source "How To Use Radial Gradients in Lightroom For Stunning Photo Edits" adds a layering discipline to the same pattern: apply the radial gradient over the light source multiple times at increasing sizes — small, then medium, then large — adding more exposure and warmth on each pass, rather than pushing a single gradient to an extreme. Exposure alone "doesn't really give us a feeling of the sun"; the combination that does is warmed temperature at +15 to +20, a touch of tint at +5 to +7, and dehaze reduced about -10. Dehaze is delicate in exactly this spot: pushed positive it oversaturates the sky unrealistically, pulled negative it desaturates and merges the sun's warmth into the sky, so small negative nudges read best. Feather is treated as almost fully soft by default in that source — hard-edged, "I would never use it." The same build then runs its inverted half: one large radial gradient covering roughly two-thirds of the frame around the light source, feather backed off slightly, inverted, then exposure and highlights darkened and temperature and tint cooled — because "the eye goes to what is brightest and warmest," the inverted pass does as much work as the glow itself.
The sky is where a strong adjustment gives itself away. Layered Sky Masks to Avoid Banding (Hard Selection + Soft Gradient Overlay) documents the failure: a single hard-edged mask, such as an auto Select Sky, can show visible banding or grating at its edge once the adjustment gets strong. The fix is to split the adjustment across two layered masks instead of pushing one harder — the Select Sky mask carries the primary move (cool the temperature toward blue, nudge tint toward magenta, contrasting against a warm global grade), and a softer Linear Gradient drawn over the top of the frame and dragged further down feathers the same adjustment across the transition, with a touch of highlight recovery and warmth added back into that zone. Cooling the sky while warming a fabricated light source lower in the frame is not two unrelated edits; together they build a deliberate top-to-bottom gradient consistent with a rising or setting sun.
Finally, rays. Sun-Ray Brush Effect via Low-Opacity Additive Strokes uses the Brush tool at moderate size (about 20–30) with lower feather, around 50, for a more defined ray edge — a deliberate contrast with the maximum feather on the sun's own glow — and very low opacity and flow. Because each stroke barely registers, you drag repeated strokes outward from the light source and let the effect build additively. Each pass is finished with a touch of exposure, warmth and negative dehaze so the rays match the glow treatment they're supposedly coming from.
Everything in the previous section is a lie about where light came from, and the sources are consistent that the lie only works when it stays under the viewer's threshold. The stated goal in the Lightroom Mobile spotlight walkthrough is invisibility: "if you're subtle enough about it, and if you can hide it enough, it just looks like a good image" (Subject Glow via Foreground-to-Transparent Radial Gradient + Inverted Mask). The sun-ray brush sets the same bar operationally — the target result is imperceptible at first glance, visible only when you toggle the effect off and on for comparison, never reading as an obvious painted ray (Sun-Ray Brush Effect via Low-Opacity Additive Strokes).
The most interesting restraint principle here is Motivated Light (Restrained Secondary-Highlight Suppression). Motivated light is a video-industry term for light in a scene that makes narrative sense — a visible lamp, a sunbeam that casts a shadow — as opposed to light that looks arbitrarily placed. It matters for eye-direction editing because not every competing bright spot should be suppressed to zero. When a secondary highlight, say a tree catching stray light at the edge of the frame, plausibly reads as lit by the same source illuminating the subject, mask it and pull Highlights (plus a touch of Exposure) down partially. Kill it completely and you break the light's narrative logic — the frame now contains a light source whose effects stop for no reason. Leave it untouched and it keeps competing for attention. The target is enough suppression that it stops being a distraction while it still makes sense as coming from the same light.
So the judgment sequence after isolating a competing bright area is: first ask whether it's motivated, and only then decide how far to push. That is a different question from "how do I make this darker," and it's the one the source insists on.
The failure modes named across this chapter all share a shape — an adjustment strong enough to be perceived as an adjustment. Banding at a hard sky-mask edge, global Dehaze pushed far enough to introduce unnatural color, positive dehaze oversaturating a sky, a fabricated sun placed somewhere the existing light contradicts. In each case the documented remedy is to distribute the effect (layered masks, layered gradients, additive strokes) rather than to increase any single slider.
Masking isolates by region; the Mix panel isolates by color. Tap "Mix" inside the Color tab and each color detected in the photo gets its own icon — red, blue, purple, magenta, green — and selecting one exposes Hue, Saturation and Luminance sliders scoped to just that color (Lightroom Mobile Mix (HSL) Panel — Per-Color Hue/Saturation/Luminance). Hue shifts the selected color along the wheel toward an adjacent one, far enough that dragging a selected yellow all the way up converts a yellow wall to green. Saturation intensifies or mutes it — raised to around 60 to make a red or blue flowerpot pop. Luminance brightens or darkens only that color, raised to 100 on a blue pot to make it stand out. Together these go beyond enhancing colors into recoloring objects outright; it is the mobile analog of desktop Lightroom and Camera Raw's HSL panel.
Two gotchas are worth internalizing before you trust it. First, a color that looks like a named swatch may not respond to it — a muted purple pot turned out to be controlled by the magenta channel instead. Test rather than assume. Second, and more consequential, Mix adjustments are not confined to the object you tapped: they apply to every area of the photo sharing a similar underlying tone, so a fix aimed at one object can visibly spill into unrelated regions.
That spill is exactly what Target Adjustment Tool vs Direct Color-Swatch Selection (Lightroom Mix) is about. There are two ways to choose what a Hue/Saturation/Luminance edit targets. The target adjustment tool — the eyedropper at the top-middle of the Mix panel — grays out the color list and lets you tap and drag directly on the photo; it intelligently detects and adjusts all underlying color channels present at that point, which is genuinely useful because real-world colors are rarely pure (a yellow wall can carry an orange or green cast). Direct color-swatch selection does the opposite: tap the named color icon and the adjustment is confined to that narrow band alone.
The two are complementary rather than interchangeable, and the demonstration of when the target tool becomes a liability is precise. Drag a yellow wall to green with the target tool, then reach for the target tool again on the now-green wall, and it also nudges a separate, unrelated yellow wall elsewhere in the photo — because it detects a yellowish hue still living inside the green. Tapping the "green" swatch directly avoids that cross-contamination. Multi-channel grabbing is a feature for mixed-cast colors and a problem when you need to isolate a single band.
Everything above is destructive-feeling in practice, even though Lightroom's edits aren't: you push a look somewhere, and the previous look is gone unless you can remember the slider values. Versions solves that (Lightroom Mobile Versions — Non-Destructive Snapshot Branching). Swipe the bottom toolbar to "Versions," tap "Create Version," optionally name it, and the current full edit state is stamped into a non-destructive snapshot. "Apply" jumps between any saved version and the untouched original, and versions persist across app restarts and phone reboots.
The useful framing is that these behave less like undo/redo and more like lightweight branches. Each version freezes the complete edit state, and there's always a guaranteed path back to the pristine source file, so one photo can be developed in several parallel creative directions rather than one committed direction. The demonstration used exactly the recoloring work from the previous section: one version named "Green Wall," another "Yellow Wall," both saved off the same original (Lightroom Mobile Mix (HSL) Panel — Per-Color Hue/Saturation/Luminance).
